You cannot teach people anything. You can only help them to discover it within themselves. – Galileo
When dads (and moms) read aloud to their kids, they gain important knowledge about the world in general, as well as knowledge related to specific subjects they are studying in school. In fact, non-fiction books are not the only ones from which children pick up such knowledge. Fiction is also a great source of learning. Indeed, more and more subject area teachers, such as secondary school chemistry teachers, have come to realize that fiction offers a great way to excite students about a topic. For instance, in a detective story, the crime may be solved using knowledge of particular chemical reactions. So dads, what are you waiting for?
Dad reminder: You can start to read to your kids at ANY age. It’s fun for the kids and dad. It really is a dad duty!
