Last night on Larry King Live, the celebrated interviewer spent a significant amount of time with Joe Jackson, father of pop star and icon Michael Jackson who passed away late last month.
Though it’s been reported by several news agencies that Joe Jackson left a lot to be desired in terms of being a father (a notion confirmed by Michael himself during an interview), one statement he said during the interview may have resonated with some fathers across the country.
"Michael was raised properly," Jackson told King. "He didn’t run the streets like most of those other kids that was in his neighborhood."
Fathers can ensure their child doesn’t run loose by using their structured parenting skills as a way to communicate and understand their child.
Dr Thomas Gordon is often credited with creating the first structured parenting program, which includes actively listening to children and taking the time to talk through problems that arise.
One of the key aspects to Gordon’s teachings is for parents to focus on a child’s behavior and explain how that was wrong, and not to focus on the child being wrong.
