A new study has recommended that men who are looking to become dads to have sex daily or at least ejaculate everyday to increase the quality of their sperm. This is especially important at least a week before their partner experiences ovulation.
Dr. David Greening, an obstetrician and endocrinologist at Sydney IVF, an Australian assisted reproduction company, observed 118 men with significant DNA damage in their sperm. The study found that the quality of the sperm improved significantly after they were asked to ejaculate daily for seven days. This included better sperm motility.
Dr. Greening presented his findings at a conference of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) in Amsterdam, and recommended that couples who are trying to get pregnant keep their pregnancy calculator handy in order to know the exact period of ovulation.
There has always been a debate among doctors whether or not it is better for men to abstain from sex for a couple of days before trying to conceive with their partners to improve the probability of pregnancy. Dr. Greening said, “These results may mean that men player a greater role in fertility than previously suspected, and that ejaculatory frequency is important for improving sperm quality.”
There is still no clear answer on why increased ejaculation improves sperm quality. One possible reason is that sperm cells that spend the shortest possible time within the testicular ducts are less likely to undergo damage by rogue oxygen molecules. The final verdict according to Greening is, “It seems safe to conclude that couples with relatively normal semen parameters should have sex daily for up to a week before ovulation date.”
