Sex during pregnancy is “healthy”

Sex during pregnancy can sometimes be considered a taboo topic, with men afraid of hurting the baby or concerned that they should not find women who are expecting attractive.

The subject has come out into the open in the last few years however, with Demi Moore’s naked pose on the front cover of the August 1991 issue of Vanity Fair sparking a nationwide discussion on sexuality during pregnancy that is still continuing today.

An article on Newsreview.com notes that 17 years on, many people still feel uneasy about the issue. To clarify the situation, it spoke to Dr Pete DeKay, a obstetrician/gynecologist in Reno.

Dr DeKay stated that it is perfectly safe for men to have sex with their pregnant wife or partner, provided she is not at risk for pre-term labor or miscarriage.

"Concerns of injury to the fetus are comical to me, but couples have to do whatever is comfortable for them," he added.

He stressed that comfort is the key factor here, with some women enjoying sex throughout their pregnancy and others feeling like the last thing they want to do is be intimate.

"The bottom line is sex is a healthy part of any relationship and it’s a healthy part of pregnancy as well," Dr DeKay concluded.

In related news, researchers at Harvard Medical School recently found that if a mother is stressed it can impact on the health of her baby.
