If history has taught us anything, it’s that staying cool isn’t easy. In fact, anyone who’s seem a John Travolta movie since 1995 may notice that aging seems to be opposite of cool, the anti-cool, the poison to cool.
It’s not that getting old makes you less likable or interesting, it’s just hard to strike that detached tobacco-trance gaze when joggling a 4-four-year old on your knee, hopping up and down to placate the squirming 6-month-old fastened to your back and reaching for a tube of Icy-Hot to soothe the pain you got climbing into your apartment window after your toddler locked the family out.
Somewhere, Miles Davis turns in his grave.
Nonetheless, one father may soon prove that neither aging nor parenting can get in the way of becoming the coolest and crudest TV parent since Al Bundy.
Already an internet sensation, the father of Twitter user Justin Halpern wants to share a piece of his mind (and digestive tract) with all of America. And he just might get the chance.
CBS announced this month that it’s begun work on a series based on the Twitter feed, S*** My Dad Says, which has gained more than 750,000 followers since August, according to the New York Daily News.
An apt description for the Twitter account, Halpern writes "I’m 29. I live with my 73-year old dad. He is awesome. I just write down the s*** that he says."
Sure enough, Halpern’s dad is awesome and offers some no-nonsense parental advice to everyone who will listen. Among the gems:
"The baby will talk when he talks, relax. It ain’t like he knows the cure for cancer and he just ain’t spitting it out."
"Remember how you used to make fun of me for being bald?…No, I’m not gonna make a joke. I’ll let your mirror do that."
"That woman was sexy…Out of your league? Son. Let women figure out why they won’t screw you, don’t do it for them."
